Bishop Trevor Willmott to receive honorary award

09 September 2019

Christ Church’s former Deputy Pro-Chancellor and Deputy Chair of the Governing Body, (and a long-standing Board member), the Right Reverend Trevor Willmott, will receive an Honorary Fellowship at this week’s graduation ceremony. Bishop Trevor was a member of the Governing Body from 2010 to 2019 and Deputy Pro-Chancellor from 2010 to 2018.

Each year, the University awards Honorary Fellowships and Doctorates in recognition of outstanding service, contribution or achievements in fields across all areas of public life.

Professor Rama Thirunamachandran, Vice-Chancellor at Canterbury Christ Church University, said: “The University is delighted to present this award to Bishop Trevor, for his dedicated service to the institution over many years, and for the impact of his far-reaching work in the Church and our community.”

In 2002, Bishop Trevor was consecrated as the suffragan Bishop of Basingstoke. During his seven years in post, he took the lead in the areas of social reform, criminal justice and rural affairs. He was also a founding trustee of two social welfare charities.

Bishop Trevor has many national church responsibilities and was elected to the Upper House of the Convocation in the Province of Canterbury in 2005, and is a member of the Business Committee of the Church of England’s General Synod.

As the Bishop of Dover, from 2010 until May 2019, Bishop Trevor had oversight for Canterbury Diocese which stretches from Maidstone southwards and includes 288 parish churches. Following his retirement in May, he remains Bishop of the Channel Islands.

The ceremony will take place at Canterbury Cathedral on Wednesday 11 September at 9.45am.
