Dame Ruth Carnall has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Canterbury Christ Church University at this term's graduation ceremony.

Ruth Carnall was the Chief Executive of NHS London until April 2013 and is now strategic advisor on healthcare to London Mayor, Boris Johnson. She has also worked as an independent consultant with public and private sector clients including the Department of Health, Monitor, Health Authorities, NHS Trusts and Glaxo as well as the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit, the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice.

In 2011, Ruth was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire for her achievements in healthcare. With her strong reputation in leadership development and the creation of high performing teams, Ruth is frequently asked to speak about her experiences in the UK and abroad.

Previous to this, Ruth spent 6 years, 1994 to 2000, as Chief Executive of West Kent Health Authority.

Vice-Chancellor of Canterbury Christ Church University, Professor Rama Thirunamachandran, said: “We are delighted to welcome Dame Ruth Carnall to the University and to honour her with this award.

“She has over 30 years’ experience in health care at the top of her profession; her dedication to improve the healthcare provision within our communities is a great example to all our students, who are now about to embark on their professional careers.”

Over 1000 Christ Church students were awarded with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the ceremony in Canterbury Cathedral in front of their families and friends.
