Film explores one man's incredible collection of Star Wars memorabilia
15 December 2015
A new documentary, commissioned exclusively for Canterbury’s Beaney May The Toys Be With You exhibition, uncovers the motivation behind one man’s incredible collection of Star Wars memorabilia.
Behind the Scenes , by Dr Sam Vale, explores Matt Fox’s journey into the world of collecting Star Wars toys and paraphernalia. The film charts the history of Matt’s collection, revealing his story and motivations.
Sam, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Media, Art and Design at Canterbury Christ Church University, uses photography and oral history to draw out Max’s story, embedded in his personal collection; producing a narrative about the pieces and revealing their distinctive stories.
While Matt is not the only person to be captivated by Star Wars, his passion for the film has fuelled his life-long relationship with its merchandise. Behind the Scenes reveals Matt’s journey as a collector, particularly exploring the subtle traces it leaves upon his home and considers how the hobby impacts on the practicalities of family life.

Sam explained: “The film underpins the reasonsthat Matt collects, showing his amazing enthusiasm and knowledge he has gained over a sustained period of time. It also uncovers insights into various aspects of collecting, such as the importance of quality, authenticity and the pleasure derived from acquiring items at the ‘best price’, as well as uncovering the inspirations, frustrations and satisfactions of collecting.”
Matt Fox’s collection is now on display, for the first time, in the Beaney’s latest special exhibition, May The Toys Be With You. The exhibition is one of the UK's finest collections of vintage Star Wars toys and original cinema posters and is the first time the collection has ever been exhibited.
Behind the Scenes will be on display as part of May The Toys Be With You in the Beaney’s Special Exhibitions Room.
