The installation service, conducted by the University’s Chancellor, is a tradition which started in 2005, when Christ Church gained University status. Professor Thirunamachandran is the third Vice-Chancellor and Principal to be installed.

Students, staff and guests attended the service in the Quire of Canterbury Cathedral. It was followed by a short reception at the University’s Augustine House, which also marked the Chancellor’s first official visit to the University.

After the reception, the Archbishop met with a group of students for a seminar discussion on ‘business and ethics’.

Professor Rama Thirunamachandran said: “It is a privilege to be the Vice-Chancellor of Canterbury Christ Church University and to welcome the Archbishop to the University for the first time to meet with students and staff.

“It has been a wonderful day and I am fortunate to have enjoyed the company of colleagues, students and friends throughout the events.”

The Most Revd and Rt Hon Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury and Chancellor of Canterbury Christ Church University had a warm and friendly approach to his first Installation service with the University. Archbishop Justin said: ”Education and universities are increasingly seen as functional places which lead to a better qualified workforce and therefore greater human resources in developing the prosperity of our nation, or even the source of exports.”

“But a great university and I dare to add, a great Vice-Chancellor, is not entirely concerned with that, but with creating the opportunity for people to think differently and to look at the world in a new way which enables it to be developed and transformed.”
