Professor Rama Thirunamachandran, Vice-Chancellor of Canterbury Christ Church University, said:
“The Ministry of Justice has informed us that our bid for the Canterbury Prison site has been recommended for approval.
“Detailed negotiations will now begin to agree and finalise the contract.
“We are delighted that our bid has been successful for approval, as the location represents a unique opportunity to extend our main campus on North Holmes Road in order to provide first class educational facilities for our students.
“Whilst the final details have yet to be confirmed, our initial plans include the development of the prison quarter into modern, high quality city centre student accommodation, whilst we consider our longer term plans for the rest of the site.”
