Only ten universities have made it through to the final in the heart of London's West End at Sadler’s Wells’ The Peacock Theatre on Friday 20 July.

The choir started seven years ago and brings together staff, students and alumni with a desire to sing.

Vince Peilow, Director of the Gospel Choir, said: “It is a great achievement to reach the finals again and to be in the top 10 university gospel choirs in the country.

“We are an inclusive choir. We don’t hold auditions and learn songs without having scores in front of us, making the choir accessible to those who cannot read music. We have student choir members from a wide range of academic backgrounds, only a few coming from the Music Department, so the choir runs on raw talent which over the years has highlighted some amazing solo singers.

“Our music ranges from traditional gospel, through to hip hop, R&B, to various styles of worship music. We have also experimented with some more secular music, allowing us to adapt our arrangements to include big gospel harmonies.”

The choir has also been invited to open the main stage for Lounge on the Farm festival goers on Sunday 8 July and perform at the Whitstable Oyster Festival on Sunday 22 July, at St Alphege Church, Whitstable.

Vince added: “We’re all really looking forward to performing at two of Kent’s most popular summer festivals and to represent the University in our Jubilee year.”
