Current research

The Centre has pursued a wide range of projects exploring the benefits of active participation in creative arts for health and wellbeing. Many of our projects have involved working with older people living with long-term health conditions, including respiratory illness, dementia and Parkinson's, and their carers. We have also explored the benefits of singing in relation to mental health.


Up for Arts

The SDH Centre is working with Nick Ewbank Associates on an evaluation of the Up For Arts project run by Voluntary Arts England in partnership with BBC Local Radio.

A choir in every care home

A Choir in Every Care Home is an initiative launched in May 2015 involving 35 national organisations. The initiative is exploring how music and singing can feature regularly in the majority of UK care homes.

03SDH_Art Form_SINGING_Carers Create (1)

Carers Create is an ongoing community arts engagement programme for carers of people with dementia, their cared-for and the wider community. Current research, running in collaboration with members of the University of the Third Age (U3A), is focusing on carer perspectives of the groups. Carers have taken part in focus group discussions and data analysis is currently ongoing.

Singing for better breathing training resource

In 2016, following numerous requests from previous project participants and singing group members, the Sidney De Haan Research Centre designed and developed the  Singing for Better Breathing Training Resource.

Broadstairs Folk Week is the largest arts/music event in Thanet annually, attracting many thousands of people (visitors and locals) to events and generating an estimated £2.4 million (2012 figures) of economic activity in the town.
