Profile summary

I started as a Senior Lecturer at CCCU in June 2016, having previously worked in the NHS for over twenty years.  I trained as a registered general nurse at Guy's Hospital London and subsequently worked as an orthopaedic nurse at Lewisham Hospital.  I have been an NMC registered Practice Educator / Lecturer since 2000 and most of my experience to date has involved supporting learning within the practice setting.

I have worked in three acute trusts across South East London and Kent in various education-related posts such as a Clinical Skills Coach and as a Practice Development Nurse for Surgery and Orthopaedics.   This involved working alongside newly qualified, return to practice and overseas' nurses, as well as supporting the development of healthcare support workers through national vocational qualifications (NVQs) and foundation degrees.  I have also held an honorary contract with King's College London for the last fifteen years where I have taught on the orthopaedic module.

My most recent post was as a Practice Placement Facilitator at Medway NHS Foundation Trust where I oversaw the clinical placement of pre-registration student nurses as well as the updating of clinical mentors.

Research and knowledge exchange

My research interests are in relation to the intuitive, tacit and embodied nature of knowledge that informs nursing expertise and have undertaken a study to investigate how newly qualified and experienced nurses utilise such knowledge in their everyday working practices.  My doctoral thesis explored the nature of professional knowledge, required for nursing competence.

Teaching and subject expertise

My subject interests are in the areas of:-

  • biomedical science
  • acute nursing care
  • mentorship and practice learning
  • nursing knowledge and expertise

and I currently teach on a variety of undergraduate nursing modules.
