In 1990 I joined Canterbury Christ Church University;  My current role is Principal Lecturer; other roles include Programme Director, MSc Interprofessional Health and Social Care; Pathway Leader for MBA Leadership and Management in Healthcare;

Teaching Institutions: Royal East Sussex in Hasting; Royal College of Nursing: London; School of Nursing, & Canterbury Christ Church University;

Nursing career - I commenced my nursing career at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Folkestone in the early sixties; I moved to St Thomas Hospital London and later transferred to Kent & Canterbury Hospital to complete my nurse education; In the late 60's  I moved to the Royal East Sussex Hospital in Hasting, as a Staff Nurse in Accident & Emergency; a ward sister in Stroke/ Rheumatology; then tranferred School of Nursing as as a pupil nurse teacher for 2-3 years.

In the mid 70's I moved to clinical practice,  as a night sister at Royal East Sussex, later I moved to the Royal Marsden in Sutton/ Fulham Road for 4 years.  I returned to Canterbury in late 1979, working at K&C, WHH, and QEQM. In 1982 I became a ward sister at the Chaucer Hospital. In 1984 I moved into Nurse education as a Clinical Nurse teacher until 1990 when I was appointed as Senior Lecturer at CCU.   

Education; During my career I completed several ENB courses;  the Diploma in Nursing [ London]; the Diploma in Surgical Nursing;  the BSc [ Hons]  Nursing Studies at Surrey University, alongside an Open University in Social Psychology;  FETC, Clincal Nurse Tutor Course; the one year PgCLT at Surrey Univserity;  following graduation from Surrey University, I obtained a MA in Health Services Management at University of Kent; I am currenlty attending  University Kent undertaking a module on Health Service Evaluation; long life learning ensures my professional and academic credibility.

Research and knowledge exchange

  1. MA - Health Service Management: Impact evaluation:  Preparation Of Preceptors undertaken over an 2 year period;
  2. PGCLT: Nurse Teachers Perception of Reflection and Reflection in Action, Novice to Expert (Distinction);
  3. BSc (Hons) - Student Nurses Expectations of their Mentoring Experiences over 3 year period;

Teaching and subject expertise

I am an external examiner for Bedforshire University for 3 Masters programmes;

My current teaching/ facilitation expertise is in the following areas;

History and Art of Nursing; Leadership, Innovation and Transformation for Healthcare; Complexity Sciences;  Quality Improvement; Impact Evaluation; Advancing Practic; Strategic  & Clinical Leadership; Managing Evidence into Practice;  Research Methods & Research Supervision;   Collaborative Interprofessional Practice; Supporting Practice Development Through Facilitated Transformation and Change Management;

Consultancy 2015-2016 

Supporting the  Transformation of Primary Care . Held worhkshps for Practice Managers and  Lead Nurses acrioss Thanet.  

Currently involved with Masterclasses for CCG/ GP groups on Transformation and the way for forward;

Professional Bodies

Royal College of Nursing, London - Active member of the RCN Education;  Research & Innovation; Quality Improvement; Leadership and Management forums; I  have acted as committee memebr on several forums commitees, latterly the RCN Education forum; I was instrumental in developing several of the forums 80/90s in mental health and adult nursing; I am an Senior Associate of the Royal Society of Medicine, London; International Sigma Theta; Honour Society of Nursing England Chapter;  RETHINK - London; Independent Health Association; Linacre Centre of Healthcare Ethics; Foundations for Nursing Studies; Quality Improvement Link with Health Foundation;  KSS: Leadership and Safety Collaboratives;

External Examiners at Luton University:  MSc Clinical Leadership; MSc Advanced Practice; MSc Enhancing quality through patient safety; MSc Health studies.
