Senior Lecturer Appears in BBC Show MAKE! Craft Britain

Curie Scott, Senior Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University, recently took part in a papercutting workshop which was aired on MAKE! Craft Britain on Thursday 9th June on BBC4.

Curie, who is also a PhD candidate at the University of Brighton, is interested in the value of creativity for thinking especially in relation to arts and health. She is particularly interested in how making generates a sense of accomplishment, wellbeing and provokes different ways of knowing about ourselves and the world.

For her research, she designed an expressive and intuitive drawing course to facilitate thinking about getting older. Though a pervasive and important topic, ageing is something we rarely talk about. Health professional students and people over 60 found that drawing, discussion and reflection was a powerful way to interrogate their assumptions and stereotypes of ageing.

Curie won a competitive PhD scholarship, has presented internationally, won a University Teaching Award, is a Higher Education Academy Fellow, and enjoys coaching and inspiring others. She initially trained as a medical doctor and has taught health professional students at Christ Church for 14 years.

She runs Drawing Edges, an interdisciplinary group for anyone interested in talking and drawing together, and is also a maker – she has exhibited and sold paintings and origami artwork as part of the Canterbury Festival and South East Open studios. She produces bespoke origami sculptures and bouquets for weddings, wall installations and runs origami courses.
