Child Nursing Placements

Students studying Child Nursing at Canterbury Christ Church University will have the opportunity to experience placements in a variety of community and inpatient placements.

The prime role of placements is to allow students to learn the practice of their future profession. The Child Nursing programme provides a variety of practice experiences for students and constitutes 50% of the programme.

Placements link closely with taught modules to enable students to make links between theory and practice and take place in both hospitals and the community.

At the beginning of the programme students are allocated a base ward. The base wards are situated at:

  • The Medway Maritime Hospital, Gillingham
  • The Tunbridge Wells Hospital, Pembury
  • The Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital, Margate
  • The William Harvey Hospital, Ashford

Each time students are allocated an acute placement throughout the 3 year programme they attend their base ward. This enables students to feel comfortable within the clinical environment and forge relationships with the mentors on the unit.

In addition to base ward placements students will have the opportunity to undertake placements in the following areas:

  • Other Fields of Practice, including Adult, Learning Disability and Maternity
  • Health Visiting
  • School Nursing
  • Short Break/Respite
  • A&E or Minor Injuries
  • Palliative Care
  • Neonatal Intensive Care
  • Elective – students arrange their own two week placement in an area relating to children’s health that interests them which can be anywhere in the UK or abroad.

Placements take place throughout Kent and students will be expected to travel or stay in accommodation to enable them to complete these.

Students will be assessed throughout each placement by their allocated mentor. Practice assessment is undertaken utilising competencies documented in the Ongoing Achievement Record (OAR) to ensure that students have the relevant knowledge and expertise necessary to meet the required skills for each academic year and subsequently for entry onto the NMC Register (Registered Nurse (Child)).

Throughout the programme students will receive feedback on their clinical skills from the people that they are caring for and their families where appropriate.

"My best memory of studying at Christ Church is my final day of placement and last day in university, celebrating the journey with a great group of friends I trained with."
