Dementia Care Modules

Please note: The Dementia Care Modules are not currently running. 

Do you wish to develop your knowledge in Dementia Care?

These modules are designed to provide you with the latest knowledge and skills and all the content is linked directly to research and NICE guidelines. We are offering modules in 2019/2020. Please see below for dates.

  • Each module is 20 credits and can be taken as stand alone or in sequence

You won’t have to spend long away from the workplace

  • Teaching is usually only two days per month in term time and is delivered at a central easy to access location
  • University days start at 9am

Don’t worry, if you haven’t been in a classroom for a while – our teaching is flexible and includes a balance of lectures, discussions, skills rehearsal, practice assessment and group/individual supervision.

Cost and location

The modules cost £855 each and are delivered at Canterbury Christ Church University, North Holmes Road, Canterbury, CT1 1QU.

Dementia Care Modules

Dementia Care: Skills for Enabling

Aims

This module would suit those who have previously studied at higher education levels 5 or 6 and is aimed atthose wishing to undertake this as a stand-alone module or as a programme of learning. This module will introduce participants to a range skills and supportive strategies for enabling people living with a dementia.This module would appeal to those who would like to develop their knowledge and skills and who work with people living with a dementia and will complement previous learning from the ‘Dementia Care: The Context’, if you have completed this module.

This module will enable participants to:

  • Demonstrate awareness of essential communication skills and underpinning theory and its application to compassionate dementia care practice
  • Critically evaluate a range of bio-psychosocial/cognitive stimulation interventions/therapies used in contemporary dementia care and treatment justifying their use in supporting people with a dementia and their families
  • Apply a range of practice skills providing a rationale for their choice in the care of a person with dementia and their family
  • Analyse a range of approaches that support enablement within dementia care in showing how this can promote wellbeing for the individual living with a dementia

This modules runs from September to November 2019.

Dementia Care: The Context

Aims

This module would suit those who have previously studied at higher education levels 5 or 6 and is aimed at those wishing to undertake this as a stand-alone module or as a programme of learning. This module will introduce participants to dementia care by examining the contemporary context of dementia care through the development of skills to link theory to best practice and to the participant’s own experience. This module would appeal to those who would like to develop their knowledge and skills and who work with people living with a dementia.

This module will enable participants to:

  • Demonstrate awareness of the causes and progression of dementia and how this relates to the psychological and social impact affecting people living with a dementia and their families
  • Critically evaluate the knowledge and theory base for dementia care and how this has shaped service provision
  • Illustrate how empowerment and compassion can be promoted in person-centered dementia care by contrasting this against examples of where care actions can disempower
  • Apply knowledge of ethical care, policy and legislation in examining current issues in practice having an impact on persons living with a dementia and their families.

This module runs from September to November 2020.
