Careers in Operating Department Practice

Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) work in the operating theatre, providing care and support for patients at every phase of their operation.

ODPs look after patients in the three phases of perioperative care – the anaesthetic phase, surgical phase and recovery phase – and play an important role within the surgery team.

Where do ODPs work?

An an ODP, you will have the opportunity to pursue a career in a number of diverse settings, including in hospitals, with the RAF or in the Army.

In this NHS Careers video, Matt, an Operating Department Practitioner, talks about his experiences of working in the operating theatre for the NHS.

Operating Department Practitioners also play an important role in the Army, as this video from a war hospital in Camp Bastion, Afghanistan shows.
