Document delivery

The document delivery service allows items to be borrowed from other libraries and is available to members of staff and students of Canterbury Christ Church University undertaking research or other extended studies.

This service is costly to administer so please make sure that the items you request are of real value to your research.

There is a cost of £2 per item for undergraduate students.

There is no charge for postgraduate students and contracted academic staff.

Staff and research students: If your research is of a commercial nature there will be an additional cost. To make a commercial request please contact the document delivery team.

Document delivery loans can be paid for by cash or card at the Library Points at Canterbury and Broadstairs or via our online payment gateway.

Before making a request, please check that the item is not held in the university library by checking LibrarySearch. Also, try using a search engine like Google in case the item is freely available online.

This may be because:

  • Your Library account has become suspended. This will happen if:
    • You have unpaid charges totalling £10 or more (including charges for document delivery requests).
    • you have an overdue loan that has been reserved by another user.

To remove the suspension, you'll have to pay the outstanding fine or return the overdue item.

  • You have reached your limit of document delivery requests.

Undergraduate (all courses) and postgraduate (certificate/diploma) students: 4 requests per academic year, increased to 15 requests for final year research projects.

Taught postgraduate students (e.g. MA/MSc): 25 requests per academic year.

Contracted academic staff and research (MPhil/PhD) students: 50 requests per academic year.

Journal articles can be delivered electronically where available and may take a minimum of 2-4 working days.

The majority of other requests normally take no more than a couple of weeks to arrive, but if we have to try several locations it may take much longer. You should allow enough time for your request to be processed as we cannot guarantee delivery within a certain time.

All items must be collected at the Issue Desk (Salomons) or the Library Point (Augustine House ground floor) and will be issued on your library account.

When the requested item is available to collect you will be notified via your university e-mail. Please collect books as soon as possible, as they are on loan to us for a limited period only.

If you are borrowing a thesis from another library, an additional copyright declaration may need be signed at this stage.

The length of a loan is decided by the library that supplies the item to us and tends to be for 4-5 weeks. Items may be recalled by the lending library at any time, and some items can only be used on library premises. Overdue items will incur a fine.

Photocopies are issued for you to keep.

All loan items (such as books) will need to be returned to a member of staff at the Issue Desk or Library Point by the due date (indicated on the slip inside the item).

All loans are subject to recall by the library who lends them out. If you are asked to return an item, it is essential that you do so.

Overdue items will incur a fine.

We would need to check with the lender, if you require a renewal please contact the document delivery team at least five working days before your item is due back.
