Membership applications from Alumni, SCONUL Access, retired members of staff and paying members of of the public must be support by proofs of identity and proofs of address. 

The following are accepted for use as proof of identity and address for the purpose of applying for a public membership library account.

Remember documents have to be valid and in date.  Expired passports, driving licences and debit/credit cards cannot be used as a proof of identity or address. Please ensure documents are issued within three or twelve months as indicated in the list below. 

You will need to provide these proofs at the Library point when you collect your membership card. Alumni members will also need to provide them again on their first trip to the Drill Hall library. 

Proof of identity

Accepted proofs of identity are:

  • Passport
  • Driving licence*
  • Bank card
  • Credit/debit card
  • EU national identity card

Proof of address

Accepted proofs of address are:

  • Driving licence with address*
  • Council tax bill/exemption certificate (issued in last 12 months)
  • Bank or credit card statement (issued in last 3 months)
  • Benefit entitlement letter (issued in last 3 months)
  • HMRC correspondence (issued in last 12 months)
  • Utility bill (issued within last 3 months)
  • Mortgage statement (issued within last 12 months)
  • Council or housing association tenancy agreement (issued within last 12 months)

*Driving licences can be used as proof of identity or proof of address, but not both. You will always be required to bring two documents.
