Study zones

We understand that your study needs will differ throughout the academic year. We have four different study zones in Augustine House to help you find a space that suits your learning preferences.

The Silent Zones are on the second and third floors of Augustine House, on the same side as the lifts. These areas are for times when you need to work on your own in silence.

  • Work silently - no talking or whispering at all in this area, please
  • Cold food only - no hot, smelly or noisy food, please find a space in the atrium.
  • No leaky headphones - please make sure others can't hear your music
  • No phones - please keep phones on silent and take phone calls in the atrium.

The Quiet Zones are available on the second and third floor, on the opposite side to the lifts. These are spaces to focus on your work. Most PCs and printers are in these areas.

  • Work quietly - please respect other library users and keep conversations short - no chatting please. Consider using the Group Study Zone or Social Study Zone if you need to chat or discuss your work.
  • Cold food only - no hot, smelly or noisy food, please find a space in the atrium.
  • No leaky headphones - please make sure others can't hear your music
  • No phones - please keep phones on silent and take phone calls in the Atrium.

Group study zones

On the ground and first floors, on the opposite side to the lifts, are the Group Study Zones. You can use these areas to work quietly in a group when you need to collaborate.

  • For focused group work and collaboration - use these areas when discussion and working together are essential
  • Cold food only - no hot, smelly or noisy food, please find a space in the atrium.
  • No excessive noise – please work quietly in a group, and remember that the study rooms are not soundproof. Please make sure your conversation or music stays inside your study room
  • Quiet calls allowed – please keep phones on vibrate/silent. No audio/video calls on loudspeaker, please.

Group study rooms

On the first, second and third floors, you will also find six bookable group study rooms, each with a PC and large screen. You can use these rooms to collaborate, such as for group assignments or practising presentations.

  • Rooms can be booked no further than 14 days in advance.
  • Bookings can be of a maximum of 4 hours in length.
  • You can make one booking for the group study rooms each day.

You can book a group study room in Augustine House using MyBookings.

Drill Hall Library

We have two bookable Group Study rooms, which both contain a long group table, PC and a large screen. These rooms are ideal for practising group presentations and projects. You can also plug in your own device.

These bookable rooms (DA004 & DA005) can be booked during 9:00 - 17:00 Monday to Friday for 2hrs.

You can book at the library reception with a valid university ID card or email dhlhelp@medway.ac.uk from your university email.

We also offer an Open Access study room (DA002) with two group tables and sofa-style seating for up to 6 people each and a smaller group table. This space contains PCs and large monitors. The room also has one super-size presentation screen.

This room is open during 9:00-17:00 Monday to Friday and is available on a first-come, first-served basis without any booking.

Access to all of these rooms on the ground floor is via the external door at the Pilkington end of the Drill Hall Library.

In Augustine House, all study spaces in the atrium are more relaxed and informal. You can use them for casual work or just to take a break from your studies. There are plenty of PCs and desks here, and there is also access to an outdoor terrace from the back of the second floor.

  • For working together and socialising - feel free to discuss work, chat and relax.
  • Stay connected – feel free to use this area for video chat, online meetings or catching up with home.
  • Have a bite to eat – However hard you're studying, it's important to stop for food! Have a hot or cold meal, take time to refuel.
  • Take phone calls – please take your phone here to make calls. You can leave your phone's ringer on when you’re in the atrium - perfect if you're expecting an important call.

  • If you are being disturbed by unreasonable noise in any of our library spaces, please do let library staff know as soon as possible – we’re proud of our spaces and keen to help make sure they are being used appropriately so that everyone can get the best out of them.
