Profile summary

I am the Learning Developer for Arts, Humanities and Languages. I have worked in the field of learning development at Canterbury Christ Church since 2007 when I joined the University as a Study Skills Adviser in Student Support and Guidance. In 2012 this role then became Academic Learning Adviser in Learning and Teaching Enhancement. I have worked in partnership with students from foundation to doctoral level across four faculties at the University to develop and enhance academic skills through individual tutorials, generic workshops and the development of online resources. I have also worked in collaboration with academic staff to embed academic literacies into the curriculum. I now work with students and staff in Arts, Humanities and Languages to support the development of students’ learning so that they can be as successful as possible in Higher Education.

My journey as a Learning Developer began with my own studies and research, which informed and enriched my professional practice. I have a BA degree in History from the University of Wales, Bangor, and a PhD in History from the University of Liverpool. I also have experience of working on two history research projects hosted by Merseyside libraries and museums, and by Liverpool John Moores University.

My professional practice is also underpinned by experience gained in a variety of teaching and learning roles, including teaching history and study skills to undergraduate students; working with adult returners preparing to enter Higher Education via a ‘Fastrack’ route; and teaching Key Skills to A level students in a Further Education college. I am a Certified Practitioner of the Association for Learning Development in Higher Education (ALDinHE) and an Associate Fellow of the HEA following successful completion of the University Certificate in Academic Practice (UCAP) at CCCU.
