Neurodiversity at university
It is important to recognise that neurodivergent students may sometimes find it hard to engage in eye contact. It is important to read their eye accessing cues to make them feel comfortable.
You will find that neurodivergent students invariably have exceptional skills, although they may have mislaid sight of them amongst their challenges – especially in mainstream education.
When you know how a student is successful you can help them develop skills that play to their strengths.
Mirroring words to match their learning style can be a good technique – for example if they ‘want to be heard’ then assure them that you ‘hear’. If they need you to ‘see their point’ then assure that you ‘see’ it.
Mindfulness and breathing techniques can also help. Watch this video as an example of a five minute guided meditation:
You may wish to access some mindfulness apps, videos, websites and instructions to practice yourself and to aid you to support others to access mindfulness practices. We have plenty of recommendations on our Library Stressless blogs.
Students who are funded through Student Finance may be able to claim for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). DSA can supply a student with a one to one mentor to meet/speak with each week, assistive technology and any hardware needed. If you have any questions about DSA, you can speak with the Student Wellbeing Service, or read further information on our module on Learning Support Plans & DSA.
