Analysing and evaluating images

Imagine you are creating a presentation about the Black Lives Matter movement in the UK. You can either search for your own image online, or use the image provided below. Try and analyse and evaluate the image using the techniques we have explored in this module.

  • Begin by describing what you see, noting the simple, easily described elements
  • Next, analyse the image source
  • Think about the quality of the image
  • Consider the meaning of the image, the context in which it was created and in which it is now being viewed by you

Taking what you find into account, do you think the image would be appropriate for you to use in your presentation?

Reflect

You have now considered a few key aspects of analysing and evaluating images and other visual media – how to describe images and assess their quality, how to identify and evaluate their source, and understanding the contexts in which images are created and in which they are viewed.

Take a moment to reflect on the ways you might look at images differently after completing this module. How will you begin to ask more questions and interrogate the images and other visual media you see? In what areas of your life and study might these skills be useful?
