Medway Festival of Learning and Teaching 2021
The Medway Festival of Learning and Teaching is jointly organised by the Universities of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church and Greenwich, who share the Medway campus. The festival aims to share, celebrate and promote our practice.
This year's festival will be held virtually on the 16th September 9.15am - 1.30pm, via Blackboard Collaborate (a platform that everyone can easily access, even if they are not at CCCU).
Our focus this year is on Community & Continuity: building communities of learning and supporting graduates’ employability. These are consistently strong themes that run through the sector and are a priority for all three universities and their collaborative partners. The topics are also central when supporting learning in a blended and digital environment, as we have all come to realise more fully since March 2020.
Our keynote is Dr Carina Buckley, who has been the Instructional Design Manager at Solent University since 2015, when the Solent Learning and Teaching Institute was created. She is responsible for leading on the development of the VLE as a student-centred learning space, and inspiring colleagues to deliver excellent and engaging teaching through innovative, pedagogically-sound practices that harness the potential of technology.
Her presentation is titled "Closing the learning loop: The value of narrative in online learning design". Technology allows for teaching beyond the confines of the classroom but on its own cannot put students in the centre of their own learning. The four concepts of community, journey, narrative and interaction are vital to the success of learning and teaching online in the longer term, and can act as a tool for humanising the online space and maintaining connection, participation and engagement between peers, and between students and staff.
The keynote will be followed by a series of presentations and workshops. The full programme and abstracts are now available.
Medway Learning and Teaching Festival Collaborative Projects Fund
The Medway L&T Festival provides opportunities for staff of the three Universities at Medway to share enhancement ideas and practices across the campus. The Festival is a networking event as well as a showcase for excellent L&T practices and workshops. Following the successful 2016 Festival with attendances from the Universities and partner colleges, a joint fund to support collaborative L&T enhancement projects arising out of the Festival was proposed and supported by the Campus Management Board.
A project fund of £3000 in total is available. Individuals or teams from the three Universities and their partner colleges can apply for amounts up to this maximum to support projects arising from the Medway L&T Festival. It is anticipated that individual project applications will be for £500 - £1000. Applications will be considered as received.
The funding may be used to:
- Invest in pilot equipment/software
- Invite external speaker(s) on project topic (to present an open workshop)
- Activities to support collaboration.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Improving assessment and feedback practices
- Developing and/or piloting innovations in curriculum design/delivery
- Improving digital literacy
- Developing student learning support and/or student engagement and academic experience.
From there the application will be reviewed by the Steering Group for the Medway L&T Festival which includes members of the three Universities.
Find out more by downloading the application form here, or from the download section on this page.
Completed applications should be sent to: MedwayLTFestival@greenwich.ac.uk by 5pm on 15th October 2021
