Welcome to the Spring 2018 issue of Inspire, where we focus on some exciting cutting-edge developments at Christ Church, including new courses, collaborative initiatives and our high-quality multidisciplinary research.

We meet Dr Alan Meades, Principal Lecturer in the School of Media, Art and Design, to discuss the development of a new Games Design degree course at Christ Church and how this has emerged from his own research into gaming and arcade culture and his collaborations with stakeholders in business and technology.

The creation of the Kent and Medway Engineering, Design, Growth and Enterprise (EDGE) Hub is a hugely exciting initiative, which will provide a major new facility for courses in science, technology and engineering by 2020. Professor Helen James, Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education, Enhancement and Student Experience), explores her path-breaking career as a female engineer and talks about her hopes for the EDGE Hub as a centre which will stimulate the teaching and career development of a new generation of engineers in the region.

We are also delighted to share news that Christ Church and the University of Kent have jointly been awarded funding by Health Education England to establish Kent and Medway’s first-ever medical school. Drawing on the expertise within both universities, the Kent and Medway Medical School will become a beacon for first-class medical education and research and help ease the current recruitment challenges faced by our region's healthcare providers.

The Centre for European Studies (CEFEUS) at the University continues to provide first-rate research into the impact of Brexit on the Kent and Medway region. Professor Amelia Hadfield reveals the latest in its series of reports, which this time focuses on how Brexit may affect regional health and social care provision.

Finally, we were delighted to welcome the Chief Executive of Stonewall, Ruth Hunt, to the University to speak as part of Christ Church’s Public Lecture series. During her visit, Ruth took time to talk to Inspire about Stonewall’s recent campaigns and the relationship between faith and LGBT equality.

I very much hope that you enjoy reading this issue of Inspire and, as always, would welcome you to tell us what you think.

Vice-Chancellor and Principal
