While the Centre has focused in its work on the health needs of people with long-term conditions, particularly enduring mental health needs, and among older people progressive conditions, including dementia, Parkinson’s and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), it has also worked with specific groups, particularly in relation to singing, such as those involved in the Choir of the Year competition and the Military Wives Choirs.

The UK has an ageing population, and the health and care needs of elderly people, with long-term conditions is a growing challenge. The arts have a crucial role in supporting care and recovery and enhancing quality of life in social care settings.

Young people are increasingly facing challenges in contemporary society, and there are growing concerns about their mental health and wellbeing giving the challenges of educational pressures and social media. The arts can help young people address some of these challenges.
