Search or browse Westlaw Edge UK for full-text access to case law, legislation, legal journal articles, and current awareness.

Westlaw Edge UK is a searchable source of case law, legislation, news, legal journals, commentary, and EU legal materials. It provides an overview, and expert analysis on any legal topic, with links to related content.

  • Go to LibrarySearch

  • Log in using your CCCU username and password. If you are away from campus or connecting with your own device over Wi-Fi, you will need to include @canterbury.ac.uk after your CCCU username.

  • Select Find Databases A-Z, then click on W, and finally click on the link to Westlaw Edge UK to open it in a new tab.

Scroll to the bottom of the Westlaw Edge UK homepage and click on Product support. This takes you to the Westlaw UK User Guides page, where you will find lots of helpful support material, including the following videos:

Basic or Advanced Certification training (online)

If you are studying Law at CCCU you are strongly advised to go to the Thomson Reuters Westlaw Certification page, where you can take advantage of the online training available. Choose the Basic Certification module, watch the videos provided, and then take the test. This will teach you the skills you need in order to search Westlaw effectively, both for your coursework and in the world of work after graduation. Tip: You can learn even more if you also take the Advanced certification.

Try searching Westlaw Edge UK by following the steps outlined below. You’ll practice using some of the most common functions and be ready to search for information for your assignments.

  1. On the Westlaw Edge UK homepage, type right of way into the main search box and press Enter.
  2. Tick the Cases box and click on Apply.
  3. Click on the plus sign to open the Topic menu, scroll down and tick the Planning and construction box, and then click on Apply. 
  4. Open the Jurisdiction menu, tick the UK box, and then click on Apply.
  5. Open the Date menu, tick the Last 6 months box, and then click on Apply.
  6. Scroll down to no. 51 in the list and note the Positive/Neutral Judicial Consideration
  7. Click on the title to see the full record.
  8. Look at the Case Digest (Summary, Abstract, Appellate History, and Related Cases).
  9. Click to view the Judgment, and then look at the Primary References, including Key Legislation Cited.
  10. Go back to the Case Digest and download this using the third icon down in the right-hand frame.
