Film Index International provides in-depth indexing of over 125,000 films- from the silent movies to the latest blockbusters- and biographical information for personalities in the film industry. 

You are probably already familiar with online film databases such as IMDb and the review site Rotten Tomatoes. Film Index International is a well-researched database produced in collaboration with the British Film Institute, indexing films from over 170 countries. It comes highly recommended by your tutors. An entry for a film will include the full cast list and credits, as well as awards and reviews.

  • Go to LibrarySearch 

  • Log in using your CCCU username and password. If you are away from campus, or connecting with your own device over Wi-Fi, you will need to include @canterbury.ac.uk after your CCCU username.

  • Select Find Databases, then click on F, finally click on the link to Film Index International to open it in a new tab.
  • Enter keywords in the search box.

  • You can limit your results to Document Type, Cast, Crew and Country.

  • See related scholarly articles in the right-hand pane.

  • Look for Full-text finder at CCCU to check article availability.

  • You can email and print results to yourself.

  • It is important to note that the cite option does not have CCCU Harvard .

  • You can export references to a reference managment tool such as Refworks.
  1. Try searching Film Index International by following the steps outlined below. You’ll practice using some of the most common functions and be ready to search for information for your assignments.

    1. Search for the film Schindler’s List. How many results do you find?

    2. Select the main entry for the film, which has the artistic and aesthetic works icon next to it.

    3. Look at some of the related articles in the right-hand pane.

    4. Find an interesting article from the list and see if you can access the full-text of the the article.

    5. Reflect on the type of information appearing in your search. How will you use this information in your assignments? How could you make you search more specific?
