The Bibliography of British and Irish History provides information about books, journal articles and other writing about the British Isles, British Empire and Commonwealth, from 55BC to the present.

For historians of British and Irish history, BBIH is an excellent bibliography of scholarly source material. The bibliography started in 1909 and contains records up to the present day. It contains bibliographical references to books, book chapters, book reviews, journal articles and some PhD theses.

Some records also contain links to additional material at The National Archives and in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as well as links to the CCCU library collection. There are additional links that help you locate material via Google Books and the JISC Library Hub.

  • You can use the subject tree, place tree or person as subject to browse.

  • You can export your results into an excel spreadsheet (.xls) or into a RIS (.ris) file which can be uploaded into a reference management tool such as Refworks.

  • You can set up alerts for your favourite topic so that every time a new item is added to the bibliography you will receive an email letting you know.

  • You can cite records (but remember to check the university guidelines on referencing too).
  1. Search for Agriculture and limit to 1500-1600.

  2. Think about how you might add in additional terms to narrow your results further e.g. types of farming, a geographical location etc.

  3. Click on one of the items and look at the subject tree to give you further clues about additional terms that you can use to narrow your search.
