Nineteenth Century UK Periodicals is a collection of titles covering the events, lives, values, and themes that shaped the nineteenth century world. It provides an invaluable, fully-searchable resource for the study of British life in the nineteenth century. It includes commercial lifestyle publishing in Britain with a particular focus on women, children, humour, and leisure activity in the Victorian age.

It is an invaluable source for social historians and students of nineteenth century literature. Many of the publications are illustrated, making it a useful source for fashion and art historians. There are some useful essays which provide context for example on subjects such as comic, children's and women's periodicals.

  • Go to LibrarySearch or access it from the Library web pages which are accessible via the University Services on your Blackboard.
  • Log in using your CCCU username and password. If you are away from campus, or connecting with your own device over Wi-Fi, you will need to include @canterbury.ac.uk after your CCCU username.
  • Select Find Databases A-Z, then click on 0-9 for 19th Century UK Periodicals (Gale), finally click on the link to the database to open it in a new tab.

You can keyword search or use the Advanced Searching option to search for publications, date ranges and illustrations. You could search for a topic for example 'cycling' and limit to illustrations (cartoon or photograph) to see early representations of cycling in the press.

Topic Finder - This tool allows you to visualize connections between search terms and topics. It takes the titles, subjects, and approximately the first 100 words from a subset of the most relevant articles retrieved and creates a graphic representation of them.

Term Frequency - This tool allows you to view the coverage of your search terms, graphed over time and note trends.
