Profile summary

I currently teach on the Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science degree, and the Physical Education and Physical Activity foundation degree and BA top-up.  I am also a supervisor on the Masters by Research in Physical Education and Physical Activity course.  Academic interests include the sociology of physical activity, physical education and sport, particular interests relate to the influence of gender within these fields.

Research and knowledge exchange

In January 2017, I successfully defended my PhD during my viva examination.  My PhD is titled: Can Sport Provide a Space for Gender Equality?: A Qualitative Study of Children who Play Korfball.  It investigates the opportunity for korfball, a sport which arguably promotes gender equality, to provide a space where boys and girls can play sport, without assumed gender differences impacting upon participation or ability.

Teaching and subject expertise

Teaching specialities are within the fields of Research Methods, and Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport.  Expertise is focussed on teaching students to be critical when considering their beliefs, and the influence of society on individual beliefs and social structures.  Sociological theories are often used to explain particular phenomena.
