As a Christ Church student, you can download free software or purchase specialist applications at a discounted rate to help you in your studies. 

We’ve teamed up with Microsoft. Office 365 to provide you with their software for free on up to 5 devices, including Macs, Android or iPad. Plus we provide anti-virus software, packages to support data analysis and other programs to assist you with your learning. 

Microsoft 365 (previously known as Office 365) includes the full range of Office applications, additional tools and software, and it’s free for our students.

It allows you to install Office (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more) on up to 5 PCs or Macs, and on other mobile devices including Android, iPad and Windows tablets.

Use the following link to install Office and log into your account using your university email address and password. Then you can choose the packages you want.

Note: At the final stage of installation you’ll be asked to sign in to the application. Make sure you enter your email address in the format of username@canterbury.ac.uk to validate your installation.

To login to Microsoft 365 Apps use username@canterbury.ac.uk.

A range of free and discounted software packages are available through OnTheHub, including the Windows 10 operating system.

Our University licence means you can download Sophos antivirus software on your home PCs and Macs.

To download on your PC:

  • Download the Sophos antivirus installation file and save it to your PC desktop.
  • Double click the Sophos.exe installation file to start set-up. (If you see a security warning, click 'Run').
  • The Sophos application will install automatically.
  • Once set-up is complete, Sophos will run an update. This can take up to 10 minutes to complete.
  • Sophos antivirus software will auto-update every hour.

For Mac

We offer NVivo as a free software download to all of our currently registered students. You must have administrator permissions for the computer on which you are installing the software.

You may need to refresh your licence each year by contacting the IT Service Desk.

If you have NVivo 10 or 11 installed on your machine, we recommend you uninstall and update to the latest version (NVivo 12) below.

To install NVivo

  1. Download NVivo 12 from the link below
  2. Download the License Key (right click - 'save as')

Updating an expired licence

Updating an expired licence

To update the licence of an existing installation of SPSS, please follow these simple steps:

  1. Check which version of SPSS you are running.

  2. Download the appropriate Licence Key (right click – 'save as'):

  3. Enter the new Licence Key when prompted by the software.

To find which Windows system type you have press "Windows" + "Pause/Break" on your keyboard.

MATLAB is a high-performance language for technical computing. It integrates computation, visualization and programming in an easy-to-use environment where problems and solutions are expressed in familiar mathematical notation.

Aimed a developers, this is a version control system.

Students and staff now have access to Microsoft Visio and Project available for the purposes of teaching and learning.

This software can be downloaded from the Azure Development Tools for Teaching website.

To install Visio and/or Project:

  1. Visit: https://azureforeducation.microsoft.com/devtools
  2. Sign in using your CCCU credentials.
  3. When prompted, select ‘Work or school account’.
  4. Accept the terms and conditions.
  5. Select ‘Download software’.
  6. From the list of software, select either ‘Microsoft Visio 2019’ or ‘Project Professional 2019’ (you can use the search function to make things easier).
  7. An information tab will open. Before you download, click on the button under ‘Product key’ to reveal your unique license code. Copy the product key into a text document and keep it safe as you will need it to validate your installation.
  8. Once you have saved the product key, click ‘Download’.
  9. After the download is complete, click ‘Open’. Right click on the downloaded file to select the mount option, or simply double click to start the installation.
  10. Click setup.exe in the folder to start installing.
  11. If a warning window pops up, click ‘Yes’ to begin installation.
  12. Once installation is complete, you can click on the installed app to start using it.
  13. Enter the product key when prompted.

NOTE: The University license for this software is strictly for the purposes of teaching and learning. Using this software on a personal device for any purpose other than teaching and learning is outside of the scope of our license. Users do so at their own risk.

The following software is licensed for installation on student machines for learning and teaching purposes. In some cases, you may need to register with the software provider using your University email address. Please note: this software is not managed by the University.

For your own security, when setting up your accounts with software providers, please don’t share your password or reuse your university password.
