Student Life in Broadstairs

The campus has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere and the Students’ Union activities provide a springboard to a vibrant social life. However, you won’t just be part of the campus community but the local community too. This part of Kent is known for its sandy beaches and bays. You can surf, sail and jet-ski and there are some uber-cool events that add to the laid back, beach-life vibe.

Arts, culture and sports

The internationally-acclaimed Turner Contemporary art gallery has a year-round programme of exhibitions and events and helped put Margate in the top ten of the 2013 Rough Guide for hot travel spots. Nearby, Resort studios, Limbo exhibition space and Crate studio and project space are home to collectives of creative professionals and in nearby Broadstairs and Ramsgate you’ll find a growing number of independent galleries and creative spaces. Dreamland the UK’s original Pleasure Park – is in Margate and as well as providing rides, arcades and events, Dreamland is real a mecca for anyone interested in seaside heritage.

At nearby Westwood Cross, you’ll find the ten screen Vue cinema but if you fancy a different kind of cinema experience, you can try one of the smaller independent cinemas in Broadstairs, Ramsgate or Westgate.  Local theatres and venues offer a year-round programme of live performances, gigs and concerts.

Walking, cycling, watersports and more... If you’re adventurous, try your hand at jet-ski or take lessons from one of the local surf clubs. If you’re into skateboarding, climbing or roller-blading, the Revolution Skatepark and Climbing Centre is near to the campus. The University’s TrySport and PlaySport programmes offer a good way to take up a new sports activity.

Eating, drinking and ice cream galore

Sea front chippys, cool bars and restaurants, micro-pubs and vintage ice cream parlours – this corner of Kent is brim full of places to eat and drink. If you fancy a change from the world of large corporate pubs and bars, you can try the micro-pub experience. Some are no bigger than a living room while others are bigger and some offer regular music gigs.  The annual Thanet Beer Festival showcases the Kentish tradition of turning hops into beers and each October, the 3-day Broadstairs Food Festival is a true celebration of local food and produce.

Browse big name brands at nearby Westwood Cross, explore the funky vintage scene in Margate’s Old Town and discover all the independent shops and boutiques in Broadstairs and Ramsgate. For all the essentials, there are major supermarkets, pharmacies and banks within easy walking distance of the campus.

"I picked Broadstairs for two reasons which went hand in hand. The first was that the Business Management course was one of the most attractive I could find. The second was the location. I’m still quite near home but far enough away to live on my own."
