Physical description
Few descriptions exist of Dickinson as she was famously reclusive throughout her life. Biographers generally agree that she had auburn hair and had a penchant for wearing white in the last decade of her life. Her friend Colonel Higginson described her as "a little plain woman with two smooth bands of reddish hair."

She composed almost 1800 poems but fewer than a dozen were published in her lifetime. She handmade booklets of her poetry.
