Profile summary

  • 1972-74 - Bingley Grammar School in Bradford as Geography teacher and Head of Careers;

  • 1974-80 - Pudsey Grammar School in Leeds as Head of Year and Head of Geography;

  • 1980-85 - Heartsease School, Norwich as Head of Humanities and Senior Teacher;

  • 1985-91 - Thorpe St. Andrew School in Norfolk as First Deputy Head then as Acting Headteacher;

  • 1992-2004 - Seaford Head Community College, East Sussex as Headteacher.

    2004 - I was Director of the Centre for Educational Leadership and School Improvememnt (CELSI) at CCCU

    Now I am a Senior Lecturer (part-time 0.6) at Canterbury Christ Church University in England (date of appointment 1/9/2004). The post involves:

    • Teaching on the MA in Transformational Leadership including Teach First dissrtation students. This also involves teaching and managing approximately 30  students pa inLondon and the the East of England.  
    • Teaching MA Education Module- currently "Mentoring, Coaching and Critical Friendship"
    • Teaching BA ED Module in "Leadership for Learning"
    • Teaching, supervising and examining Doctoral students;
    • Research and writing in the field of leadership development
    • Consultancy in relation to leadership development and school improvement – with practitioner groups, individuals and organisations


  • Chairman of Human Scale education and Board member for 25 years

  • Chair of Governors at St Pauls and St Johns Primary School Federation in Tower Hamlets, London.

  • Chair of Mindful Music - a charity 
  • Trustee of Achievment for All  Academy trust in Berkshire
  • The National College Teaching Leadership (since 2002 until closure) – selected and trained as a consultant working on a range of programmes with Headteachers, Middle leaders and School Bursars. Now I am a consultant facilitator involved with international work.  

  • Trained and accredited (by the London Leadership Centre) as an Advanced Mentor/Coach for leaders

  • Consultant for International Leadership Associates

Research and knowledge exchange

My areas of focus are leadership and management and in particular leadership development. I carry out consultancy for CCCU in this area. a This work is with individuals or groups e.g. in Kent, Medway, London (Tower Hamlets, Hackney) as well as abroad e.g. Rwanda, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland and Denmark.

My research is into leadership development and I have published in this area as well as impact Studies e.g. for the national college of Teaching and Leadership in Engand.

Teaching and subject expertise

My teaching is centred on leadership and management and this goes from undergraduate to post-doctoral work as well as non-accredited programmes. 

  • Director of an Erasmus Intensive Programme for Masters students 6 years. CCCU, Jagiellonski University, Oslo University, University College Dublin, Murcia University and Selcuk University.  4 of the original Erasmus IP members have received funding (2015-2018) for the development of a school self-evaluation tool for use across Europe.

  • Advisor to Jagiellonski University to assist in developing leadership programmes across Poland and was a consultant to the Lithuanian Ministry of Education (November 2012 – January 2014) devising, writing leadership programme for all headteachers in the country and training the trainers. I have worked with Estonian school leaders, Ministry of Education and School Development Centre

  • I helped lead a training the trainers programme in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ( September 2103 – September 2105) for the National College of Teaching and Leadership in England

  • I have worked with Chinese leaders in Canterbury and in Shenzhen in China on leadership programmes over 3 years (2005-8)

  • I  visited Rwanda over 10 years to work in Jill Barham School in Cyangougou on the Congo border. In 2011 I ran a “Training for Trainers” one week programme (funded by the Ministry for Education) for some 50 Rwandese so that they could build capacity to train leaders themselves. I was the keynote speaker (November 2013) at a national Conference organised by the Rwandan Ministry of Education.

  • I have visited Pakistan twice and in 2012 and 2013. I ran 2 courses (for Master Trainers and Headteachers) and contributed a day towards another for Executive Leaders. This was funded by City Schools.

  • I have organised and run study visist for school leaders to Poland, Spain, Estonia, Norway, Lithuania and Denmark.

I am a menber of  UCU

External activities

I have spoken at a number of major conferences e.g. in Rwanda, Pakistan, Lithuania. Poland. and ICSEI (5x) and BELMAS. I was on the national execitive of SHA.
