About Tudors and Stuarts History Weekend

Our History Weekend comprised 22 ‘events’ and was again exceedingly popular bringing people from across the British Isles and the United States to Canterbury to explore a wide range of topics, from the Tudor Counter-Reformation and the lives of Black Tudors to Oliver Cromwell’s attitude to witches and John Churchill’s career as statesman, politician and famous general.

We were able to draw on a wide range of internationally known scholars and well-known popular historians, and among the talks that sold out were those given by Helen Castor, David Starkey, Alison Weir and Andrew Hopper. Those attending were also able to see manuscript and book treasures from the Canterbury Cathedral Archives and Library, including the city’s charters from this period.

We sold over 1500 tickets demonstrating the popularity of these History Weekends and again the book stall proved to be a great draw, as did the author signing including Alison Weir’s pre-publication copies of her Anna of Kleve. Kings and Queens were not the only themes that attracted our audiences and we had several sessions on War and Politics; the Church, and Social History. Again, our attendees enjoyed the excitement of learning about new topics and new interpretations and among the comments received were “the informal, friendly atmosphere, mix of people, mix of speakers and subjects. Really relatable and informative lectures, fun – real intellectual buzz” and that the best part of the Weekend was the “chance to listen and speak to historians whose work I am interested in, and whose careers I have closely followed”.

As in previous years, the surplus will go to the Ian Coulson Memorial Postgraduate Award fund to aid postgraduates at CCCU who are studying Kent history topics. We have now aided 10 postgraduates and without such funding some would not be able to undertake their studies at all.
