Andrew Swann

Senior Operator - BBC

After graduating in 2001 Andrew spent a few months working for a small post-production company. He then worked freelance for nearly 2 years. Andrew worked 2 days a week at BBC Radio Kent where he performed a variety of roles including answering phones, booking guests, technical studio management, on-air presentation and audio editing. During this period he also worked from his home studio as a sound designer and editor on a series of hour-long science fiction audio dramas for Big Finish Productions.

Andrew has been doing his current job of Senior Operator, also with BBC South East, for 5 years. He works in a multi-skilled newsroom and in that time he has performed (and still regularly does) the following technical jobs on 'South East Today' as well as 'The Politics Show': Video Editing, Sound Mixing (studio and location), Floor Managing, Camera Operation (studio and PSC news gathering), Graphic Design and Vision Mixing Directing.

Andrew is currently one of 4 senior staff who direct the main flagship 6.30pm regional news programme. In December 2008 he reduced his working days at the BBC so he could concentrate on his own freelance work once again. Recently Andrew has worked on a variety of short films, documentaries, audio and theatre productions.

"I chose to do FRTV principally because it had a significant part of the course geared towards practical training. This was of particular use to me in the beginning of my career as it enabled me to ease into roles that otherwise I would have had to have had significant training for".
