UNIfied

Lorna Van Baar - editor in chief - resurrected the campus student media outlet Unified. It had previously been a newspaper but had fallen into disuse. Lorna launched Unified as a website in October 2016 with the help and support of MMJ tutors.

It has been a fantastic success publishing nearly 200 pieces of content which generated almost 40,000 page views.

Achievements by Lorna and her team:

Next year's Unified team has a strong Multimedia Journalism presence

Year 3 student's first-person feature goes national

Kayleigh Hopgood's feature on the unlikely way she met her fiancé was picked up by the nationals. Kayleigh met future hubby Gary playing action game Call of Duty online. His first words to her were: "Please don't kill me again."

The story was used by national media websites such as the Mail Online and The Sun

Kayleigh did a series of interviews for broadcast media including Radio 5 live.

Year 3 student's search for long lost doppelgängers used by Kent Live

Kayleigh Hopgood again. She produced a newsday story which was used by Trinity Mirror's Kent Live. Kayleigh found a national newspaper clipping in a draw in her flat featuring two identical but unrelated 15-year-old girls who met by chance at a swimming meet in 1959. She launched an appeal with the help of Kent Live to track down the women.

We eventually found one of the women in the Isle of Mann but she did not want to be interviewed.

Year 2 student's transgender story used and followed-up by national media

Sean McPolin's story of a transgender pupil who won a legal battle with her school was followed up by a host of outlets including Mail Online, The Sun, Buzzfeed and Huffington Post.

Year 2 student's reindeer meatballs story picked up nationally

Jordan Starr noticed an unusual starter on a Canterbury pub's Christmas menu. His story for Unified was used by Kent Online and followed up nationally.

Year 1 students' VW Camper Van Café story picked up by Kent Live

Rebecca Sheeres and Philippa Golding's newsday story about a couple who turned their VW Camper Van into a café in memory of their late sisters was used by Kent Live.
