Description
garden-history-570

Using a combination of lectures, workshops and guided tours on the medieval monastic sites of St Augustine’s Abbey and Christ Church Priory, and the later gardens of John Tradescant for Lady Wootton, participants will explore garden history with experts such as Jayne Wackett, Mat Baldwin, Karen Brayshaw and Jennifer Potter. Please note the garden tours are now sold out but places remain for the other aspects of this event, including the workshop sessions.

Opening Lecture - Dr Jayne Wackett

The history of gardens from medieval times to the early Stuarts witnessed an explosion in the range and types of flowers, fruits and trees cultivated in formal settings at monasteries and at the mansion houses of the nobility. For this educational study day, Dr Jayne Wackett’s opening lecture will provide a historical context for the day by discussing garden history from Eden to Tradescant.

Workshops

Following a refreshment break, participants will join one of the two workshops:

  • 17th-century garden design
  • The scientific legacy of the Tradescants

Participants will have selected their preferred option when booking. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Booking

Tickets are priced at £ 15 full price and £12 for full-time students/unwaged

The first afternoon session will be a lecture highlighting aspects of the Tradescants’ importance before the afternoon refreshment break and a roundtable session where participants will be able to question a panel of experts, including Jennifer Potter, Jayne Wackett, and experts from the university.

Any surplus income after all expenses have been paid will be added to the Ian Coulson Memorial Postgraduate Award fund to aid postgraduates at CCCU researching Kent history topics.
