Profile summary

Bryan Hawkins is an artist and curator intersted in Visual Culture and in particular Landscape, Film, Animation, Antiquarianism and Drawing

Whilst specialising in the broad area of visual culture and art Bryan’s research activities include  C20  and contemporary art practice and theory, curating, film making and  animation. Bryan is active as an artist and curator and his current creative practice engages themes of romanticism, history place and landscape. These themes have recently been explored through drawing, painting, photography, film , sculpture and installation. Work has been made in relation to specific sites including the Margate coast, Folkestone, various concrete pillboxes in  Kent  and the  Avebury and Arbor Low prehistoric  stone cirles. During 2011 and 2012 collaborative work has been undertaken with Canterbury Archaeological Trust and The A Town Unearthed project Folkestone in relation to the significant Wear Bay dig and its interpretation.

Recent practice based research is focused on the cultural construction of the experience of land and  landscape. Recent exhibited work has included the Ghost Ships project - including work exhibited in the Turner Contemporary Open 2009 and at The Sidney Copper Gallery Canterbury. Recent curatorial projects have included The Cabinet Project exhibition within the ‘Dead Season Live Art’ programme of live art events in Margate 2010 and Earth and Vision - Art, Archaeology and Landscape funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2012.
