Profile summary

Tim is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Media, Art and Design who teaches on the Film, Radio and Television programme. He is an active documentary filmmaker with research interests currently focussed on amateur cine in the Canterbury area.

Research and knowledge exchange

Tim is currently researching amateur cine in the Canterbury area between the 1920s and 1960s. This research has led to the discovery of several collections of early amateur films that provide a unique record of Canterbury before the Second World War and show the early development of amateur filmmaking. Tim has given a number of screenings locally and has formed close links with the Cathedral Archives and the Canterbury Museums.

Teaching and subject expertise

Tim teaches a range of practical hands-on modules focussing on live TV studio production and traditional stop-motion model animation.

Publications and research outputs

Tim is an active documentary filmmaker. He began a major research project to collect, digitise, archive and evaluate historical amateur film made in the Canterbury region. He discovered a large number of films, several of which are of national or international significance. These include scenes of T.S. Eliot at the first performance of Murder in the Cathedral and unique film of Count Zborowski, the inspiration behind Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. These exciting discoveries have led to the production of the following documentaries that he has produced and directed:

Seeking Sydney (2015)   In: MeCCSA 2016 Annual Conference, 6th-8th January, 2016, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK. It won the Award of Excellence at the Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards 2016 and also at the Cinema World Fest Awards 2016. It was an award nominee at The Short Film Awards in New York. It has been officially selected for The Headline International Film Festival and The Kiwi International Film Festival and the Aukland Film Festival.
