The Performance Art of Teaching

In this talk, I will present my current research into the relationship between teacher identity in teaching and the use of performance-related skills by teachers in the classroom. Do teachers consciously construct their own separate teacher identities for the classroom or is their identity inside the classroom an extension of their everyday out-of-classroom self? To what extent do teachers exploit certain performance-related skills that are usually associated with the actor’s craft in order to create a conducive learning environment and engender learning? What is the nature of the interaction inside the classroom and how important is teacher/student rapport? Do current approaches to teacher training recognise and incorporate training in classroom interpersonal skills or are teachers expected to just get on with it and somehow cope? These and other related questions will be offered for thought, discussion ... and perhaps a little bit of audience participation.
