Over the coming year, Sidney Cooper Gallery will be celebrating 150 years since our founding through a series of exhibitions that each explore a different aspects of our history. In this first project, artist Stephanie Quayle will consider the legacy of our namesake and founder, Thomas Sidney Cooper, a renowned livestock painter. In his last painting, Sheep in the Snow (1902), an unfinished figure is visible riding a horse off into the distance. Taking inspiration from this final work, Quayle will create a life-sized raw clay sculpture of a horse in the gallery. Set amongst her smaller ceramic sculptures and drawings, these works will bring the beasts of Sidney Cooper back into our present day. Quayle has been co-commissioned by Sidney Cooper Gallery and Turner Contemporary to make new pieces for our summer exhibitions. See more of her work at Turner Contemporary in their exhibition Animals & Us running from May 25 to September 30.
