A day school to marvel at the riches of early manuscripts from the
4th century onwards. We shall see how Roman and Greek literature
was committed in writing onto parchment rolls, its perilous survival
through the Dark Ages where monastery libraries were the only
safeguard, the revival of learning and scholarship under Charlemagne and the wonderfully clear new script invented for the purpose, and the rediscovery of the ancient world and its literature by the Renaissance humanists. The tremendous arrival of moveable printing in the 1400s, a major event of world history, meant that texts could now be produced quickly in multiple copies, but were they accurate and could the original manuscripts now be dispensed with? Here enters the fascinating and complex world of textual criticism which has occupied some of the most acute minds in the history of scholarship.
