Wednesday 11 October 2017 | 10am-12pm |8 sessions Tutor: Caroline Millar | Canterbury campus | £84 ‘I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.’ - John Muir This course is an opportunity to read and think about how a range of writers and artists have used the idea of the journey as a source of literary and artistic inspiration, and to think about how we can use this in our own writing and self-realisation. Each week we will study a variety of texts from travel writing to memoir, nature writing to the novel, poetry to psychogeography. We will consider how the journey, both real and imagined, has been used to shape our identities and how we relate to the natural world. In addition to the written word, we’ll explore how sound, images and memory also work to trigger creative expression. Suitably inspired by our readings and discussions, there will be in-class exercises and opportunities to contribute our own writing. (This course was originally advertised to start on 27 September.)
