Sunday 12 November 2017|10am-4pm Tutor: Tristan Ireson-Howells | Canterbury campus | £39 The short story retains an important place in the American literary imagination. American authors have been drawn to the medium for its capacity to portray vivid snapshots of the American experience, but also reflect on much broader personal and historical themes. This day school will explore the American short story in the last twenty-five years. We will look closely at a cross-section of modern stories from a group of innovative writers. This course will aim to introduce readers to a collection of contemporary writers outside the literary mainstream such as Tobias Wolff, Sherman Alexie, Jhumpa Lahiri, Don DeLillo, Robert Coover and Lorrie Moore. Readings will allow us to explore these stories in terms of their cultural and personal depth, introducing students to new authors as well as discussing pertinent themes as America reaches a period of flux, a year into President Trump’s time in office.
