Tutor: Derek Mitchell | Canterbury campus | £105 Over ten weeks we will discuss notions including: virtue, knowledge, truth, courage, love, hubris, justice, democracy and temperance as they feature in classical philosophy. We will see how these common notions that we use today come down to us from the Greeks and how we have adapted them to our times.
After an introductory session, each succeeding class will focus on a specific notion which has come down to us from the Greeks. We will use work from Plato and Aristotle to see how these ideas were discussed and developed and how we apply the same ideas in our modern lives, using both the texts from antiquity and present day examples and concerns.
By the end of the course we will not only have some familiarity with the work of Plato and Aristotle but also a good understanding of what we owe to the Greeks in terms of our modern discourse about the key ideas which shape the way that we live our lives today.
