Mr Simon Gwynne

Chief Estates Officer

I have worked within the estates and facilities sector for over 30 years. I began my career as a Building Surveyor then developed specialisms in contract and project management, before moving into senior management roles within a number of organisations leading on estates and facilities development.

Over the course of my career, I have worked at both operational and strategic levels in a range of large complex organisations, this has given me a sound understanding of the challenges faced by large organisations undertaking a comprehensive development programme. Having taken the lead on numerous £100m+ programmes, I understand the dynamics and issues facing the University in terms of the development of strategy, governance, programme, procurement and of course successful delivery and operational management.

Prior to starting at Canterbury Christ Church, I worked for the NHS in two flagship organisations – Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and The Royal Free London Trust. During this time, I was fortunate to lead on various complex redevelopment programmes as well as significant change projects. My time within this sector has been extremely rewarding both from a professional and personal perspective. As an estates professional my role is to support the day-to-day operation of the organisation, meaning much of my work allows others to succeed, this both motivates and inspires me. Having the ability to give something back is personally important and rewarding, I have played a significant role in developing facilities that have directly helped to change people’s lives, this is something I never forget or underestimate. These factors greatly influenced my decision to join the University.

My role as Director of Estates and Facilities is to support the organisation in meeting its strategic vision, this relates primarily to ensuring the estate and facilities services meet the needs of both students and staff but also, as a Senior Management Team member, I work to ensure we meet the University’s mission and values. Our staff community is our greatest resource, we will succeed through working together as a team.

What inspires you about CCCU?

Christ Church is quite simply a fantastic place to work. There are so many elements that inspire me – the historic setting, the vibrant city, the energy of our students and staff, the friendly and inclusive environment, the commitment of staff, and importantly, the strong leadership that is founded in our mission and values.
