Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development

I have been a HR professional for more than 20 years. I began my HR career in the retail sector and have worked as HR Director at four universities: Christ Church, Edinburgh, Kent and Queen Mary University of London. My main accomplishment in these roles has been in creating meaningful people strategies that support the organisation and the people who work in it.

I have a very broad appreciation of HR, from people development and organisational development to employment law (which I studied for a postgraduate diploma) and reward. I used to teach Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development students reward and employment resourcing at a local college. I’m also interested in how the whole organisation works, so I enjoy being part of SMT and working beyond the HR function.

My main responsibility is ensuring we are working on a people strategy which supports the delivery of the strategic framework.

What are your current priorities?

We are just beginning the work on implementing the new people strategy which includes developing our approach to change; improving how we consult and communicate with staff. We are looking at how we improve our approach to appraisal/performance management – it would be great if we could say that everyone in the University has productive conversations with their line manager with clear goals and clear plans for development and progression at Christ Church.

What inspires you about CCCU?

Our diversity – the range of subjects we teach and the incredible dedication of our staff and students to their own development and success. It’s always great to be part of graduations to see our students enjoying what they have achieved.
