Ian spent 44 years in the Police Service, including 3 years as an assistant chief constable in Kent, 7 years as an assistant commissioner in the Metropolitan Police, and 8 years as chief constable of the British Transport Police. His tenure in the Met included leading the second investigation into the murder of Stephen Lawrence, directing the Met’s role in the Millennium celebrations, and managing public order operations across the whole of London, such as the Notting Hill Carnival. In the British Transport Police he led their response to the terrorist bombings in 2005. He also undertook the enquiry into the Met Police arrest of Damian Green, the then policing minister. His policing career included 5 years as the Chair of the Crime Committee for the Association of Chief Police Officers, with responsibility for developing national policy for tackling crime in England and Wales.

Between 2009 and 2012 he was the Director of Security for the Organising Committee for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

He holds a first class honours degree in Social Science and Administration from the London School of Economics.

In 1994 he was awarded the QPM; in 2001 he was appointed a CBE; and in 2009 he was knighted.

He is currently a non executive director of the Security Industry Authority, a member of the Football Association Regulatory Authority and their Compliance Monitoring Authority, chairman of the trustees of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, a member of the Audit committee for the British Museum, a Deputy Lieutenant for London with responsibility for the Borough of Camden, Chairman of a boys football club which runs 19 sides in Orpington, a committee member of the Ex CID Officers Association and an honorary fellow at Canterbury Christ Church University in Kent.
