Sue has over 30 years of experience in providing public relations and communications services in the public and private sector including stakeholder management, gained within complex and challenging political and economic environments. For the past 10 years, through her communications management and consultancy business Sue Appleby Associates Ltd, Sue has held several Interim Communications Directorships mainly in the public sector for organisations such as the London Borough of Brent, Essex County Council, Peterborough Public Services (covering Peterborough City Council and Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals Trust), Oldham Council, Guildford Borough Council and the London Borough of Southwark.
Prior to that, Sue held various senior communications posts at BT plc including Head of Regional PR and Partnerships, Head of Reputation and Internal Communications at BT Global, and Head of Communications and Strategy at BT, Midlands and East of England. While at BT, Sue launched and ran the BT Technology Journalist of the Year Awards to build and cement critical media relationships
During her career, Sue won the Communicators in Business Award of Excellence for plain English Research and development material and led a 50-strong communications team who were winners in the CIPR (Chartered Institute of Public Relations) Local Government Excellence Awards.
An active and energetic advocate of digital and social media, Sue is a Fellow of the CIPR, and a member of the CIPR’s Council and Professional Practices Committee, having served for five years as Regional Group Chair. She is an external examiner for Bournemouth University and guest lecturer at the London College of Communications as well as a judge for the CIPR Excellence in Local Government Awards.
