Register with a GP and get up to date with essential vaccinations

All students should be registered with a local GP at the place where they study. If you have moved away from home to be at Christ Church then you need to register with a new GP NOW! Go to our information on how to do this and follow the links to register with a GP.

The Health Protection Agency have advised us that many universities have experienced outbreaks of mumps in recent years, and that it is important that you are vaccinated against mumps, measles, and meningitis, in order to have some protection against these infectious and highly communicable diseases.

Measles and Mumps
It is important that you have received 2 vaccinations against measles and mumps. Most students who were born in the UK from October 1992 onwards should have had two doses of the MMR vaccine as part of the schools vaccination programme which was introduced in October 1996. If you missed the 2nd MMR at this stage, you may nonetheless have received it as part of your final booster immunisations given when you were 15 years old. Therefore, the majority of UK students coming to university from school this year should have been fully immunised.

If you are unsure of whether you have been vaccinated at school, or if you were born before October 1992, then you should check your vaccination status with your GP and make sure you are vaccinated if you have not already received two doses of the MMR vaccine.

You should also arrange to be vaccinated if you are not from the UK and you have not had two doses of the MMR vaccine already.

Meningitis
It is also important that you are protected against meningitis C. If you were in full-time education in the UK in 2000 then you would probably have been immunised as part of the schools-based programme. If you have come to university from a UK school at age 18 or 19, then it’s a good idea to check that you were immunised in 2000, otherwise you should confirm your meningitis C status and arrange to be immunised if you have not had this done already.

Please ensure you do this, as meningitis C is a very serious disease and it is essential that you are protected against it whilst at university.

IF in doubt, check with your GP and arrange to have any MMR and meningitis C vaccinations without delay!
