Apprenticeships

The University has decided to support the National Apprenticeship scheme which has been successful in increasing the number and range of businesses offering Apprenticeships - the government is seeking to further strengthen the scheme to ensure that all suitably qualified young people will be entitled to an apprenticeship place.   The first intake started in September 2010.

What is an Apprentice?

An apprentice learns a trade or vocation through a combination of on and off the job training and acquires practical skills knowledge and understanding in a particular role via a supported work placement.  The placement is usually for a period of 12 - 18 months when the apprentice will be employed on a fixed-term contract.

The apprentice will gain a recognised apprenticeship qualification through a combination of taught and assessed learning by attending college or by assessment in the workplace.  Formal learning usually takes place for a period of 1 day a week.  Click here for a sample of a qualification framework for apprentices.

What type of Apprenticeships are available?

There are 180 types of apprenticeships including:

  • Business Administration
  • IT
  • Hospitality
  • Facilities Management

More information can be found at the National Apprenticeship Service.
