Innovative Strategies & Approaches for Successful Student Induction, Transition & Progression
Theme 3: Induction & Transition
Useful for any member of staff involved in student induction and progression. Programme Directors & Administrators especially welcome.
Brief outline:
It is no secret that the transition from school / college to University can be turbulent and is understandably accompanied by significant fear and apprehension that can lead to withdrawal from the University. In a short space of time, we expect students to adjust to a very different learning environment, often having just moved away from home for the first time and while trying to juggle University study with other significant responsibilities, such as part time jobs. In addition, in this environment of widening participation, many of our students come from a background where University education is the exception rather than the ‘norm’, yet we expect them to know exactly what to do and how to manage their learning!
This interactive session aims to identify the expectations of students when they arrive at University and determine how these compare to staff expectations, before exploring various methodologies (collated from various departments within the University) that can be used to support students more effectively during this transition and encourage them to be excited about their learning, more engaged in the process and to combat student dissatisfaction and withdrawal. The ethos that the session is built upon is that induction is an ongoing process that spans the three full years of study and that it should be attached to the programme and to the assessments utilised. This session will introduce methods for achieving this and encourage participants to share their practices and experiences through discussion sessions.
